Rossi awaits 'special' return

Ex-Red Giuseppe Rossi is looking forward to a 'special' return to Old Trafford on Wednesday night with Villarreal.

The former United striker spent three years at Old Trafford, netting four goals in 13 appearances for the first team and countless others for the Reserves.

A lack of first team opportunities and the arrival of Carlos Tevez in the summer of 2007 prompted the Italian's switch to Spain, where he excelled in his debut season, scoring 11 goals in 27 appearances.

Despite having struggled with a recent knock, Rossi is desperate to play some part in the Champions League Group E clash against his former team-mates.

"I'm hopeful I can feature,” he told EFE. “I feel good and I'm slowly recovering my best form.

"The game against United will be a great encounter against the best team in the world and for me it's going to be special having played there.

“All the players at Villarreal can't wait to play such a game.”

Villarreal's Rossi out of Man Utd clash

16.09.08 | tribalfootball.com

Giuseppe Rossi is out of Villarreal's Champions League clash at Manchester United.

The former United trainee broke down in training yesterday with a foot injury and had to cancel a scheduled media conference with the English press.

It's a big blow for Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrino, who will now lean on Guille Franco to provide the firepower against the defending European champs.

Lippi: I Would've Called Rossi & Montolivo

Lippi: I Would've Called Rossi & Montolivo
Marcello Lippi has responded to criticism over the lack of younger players in his Italy squad, and says he would have called up Giuseppe Rossi and Riccardo Montolivo if they weren't injured.

This weekend, the Azzurri begin the defence of the trophy they won in Germany two years ago, as they travel to Cyprus for their opening 2010 World Cup qualifier.

World Cup winning Italy coach Lippi, who has returned for a second spell in charge, has been criticised in some quarters for not picking many young players, and instead largely sticking to the old guard who failed at Euro 2008.

“I have nothing against the people who didn't make it,” Lippi told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“For one thing I would have called Riccardo Montolivo and Giuseppe Rossi if they were available.

“I am also watching Mario Balotelli because he is a promising youngster. I like him a lot and I think he'll become an important player.”

Lippi also explained the exclusions of Massimo Ambrosini and Marco Materazzi.

“I respect Ambrosini as a player and a professional but I have to make my decisions,” he continued.

“As for Marco, he is still suffering from an injury and I would rather call Fabio Cannavaro and not take any risks.

Lippi then warned his players not to take the match against Cyprus for granted, or else a shock could be in store.

“The more we think it will be easy, the more difficult it will be,” the 60-year-old noted.

“This is the first game on the road to repeating Berlin. I didn't just come back to win but to rebuild a winning foundation.

“However, we will remember that we have the world champions' logo on our shirts and we will be united and full of intent.”

ROSSI BLOW STRIKES VILLARREAL

Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi will miss the start of the new La Liga season after injuring his ankle in training.

Last season's 11-goal marksman is likely to miss the opening two league games against Osasuna and Deportivo La Coruna following a training ground collision with Marcos Senna.

"Giuseppe Rossi has suffered a sprain in his left ankle during training," read a club statement.

"The Italian player was injured following an accidental collision with Marcos Senna and left the session to be attended to by medical staff.

"If all goes well his predicted recovery time will be between two to three weeks."

Italy aim to recapture spirit of Berlin (FIFA.com) Friday 5 September 2008

Looking as elegant as ever, Marcello Lippi is clearly enjoying being back at the Italian national team helm, if the mischievous glint in his eyes is anything to go by. Determined not to rest on the laurels of the Azzurri's triumph at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, the experienced strategist insists he has "not come back just to win, but to recreate the conditions that enabled us to triumph in Germany".

And in the wake of the Azzurrini's shock quarter-final exit from August's Men's Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008 at the hands of Belgium, Lippi chose to highlight that his Germany 2006 side was "the last Italian national side to bring back a trophy. That's a revealing reflection of Italy, a nation which boasts highly talented individuals who find it hard to give their all when playing for their country."

The former Juventus and Inter Milan tactician also made mention of the recent award of the FIFA World Champions Badge. "We are, as of this week, the first country to be able to wear the FIFA Badge on our shirts, which underlines that we're the defending champions," said Lippi. "That should serve to remind us what the winning formula is. If we want to relive the emotions we felt in Berlin, it's vital we take Saturday's match with Cyprus seriously. There are no easy matches."

Though determined to recreate the spirit that took his side to victory two summers ago, Lippi insists he will not show any favouritism: "The heroes of Berlin won't receive any special treatment. To play in the national team you need to deserve it, even when it comes to players like (Alessandro) Del Piero."

Cannavaro and Toni back in the fold
After an under-strength side fought back from two goals down to grab a 2-2 friendly draw with Austria in Nice on 20 August, Lippi has welcomed back several big names into his 22-man squad. For the Nazionale Azzurra's first two matches in Group 8 of European qualifying for South Africa 2010, against Cyprus and Georgia on 6 and 10 September respectively, the Italy supremo will be able to count on captain Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid), keeper Morgan De Sanctis (Galatasaray), up-and-coming young talent Alessandro Gamberini (Fiorentina) and attacking focal point Luca Toni (Bayern Munich).

Missing through injury will be Simone Perrotta (AS Rome), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina) and Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), while Inter Milan stalwart Marco Materazzi is rested, though he remains "part of the squad".

Sampdoria's unpredictable forward Antonio Cassano failed to make the cut, as did AC Milan vice-captain Massimo Ambrosini. "I had to make choices. And moreover, I'm not going to explain to you every time why I haven't called up such and such a player," said the fiery coach. Lippi also reiterated that he would have included both Montolivo and Villarreal forward Giuseppe Rossi "if they'd been available".

"I'm sticking to my plan to gradually integrate certain young players. In contrast to Fabio Capello, who can only choose from the 38 per cent of English players in the Premier League, I'm fortunate enough to be able to pick from 60 per cent of the players in Serie A."

'The players must put the team first'
Lippi has already brought in six new faces compared to Roberto Donadoni's squad for UEFA EURO 2008. These are forward pair Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina) and Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus), defenders Daniele Bonera (AC Milan), Marco Cassetti (Rome) and Andrea Dossena (Liverpool) and midfielder Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria).

It is clear therefore that the supremo intends to rebuild his defensive line as well as reorganise the Azzurri midfield. And though Italy are clear favourites to win their qualifying group, Lippi has warned his charges against any damaging complacency. "I will ask all my players to put the team first. That is what matters most; the tactics will come later." All that remains now is to see if the Nazionale respond to the urgings of their returning master.
