Rossi living the dream

Sitting in the lobby of the team hotel in Qinhuangdao, Italy and Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi was a relaxed figure. In front of him were relaxed members of the Cameroon squad. To his right, the Korea Republic team were marching out of the doors for a mid-morning stroll, while the Hondurans were logging on to the internet to check out the latest football news.

Surveying the scene of this mini-United Nations of football, the 21-year-old couldn't help but smile as he relived the experience of the welcome he received from the Chinese hosts, who presented every player with a bag of gifts upon their arrival.

"So far, it's been a great experience - and we haven't even played a match yet," he beamed. "We've been waiting a long time to come here and experience this atmosphere. It's something unique. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I'm sure at one stage, we all dreamed about participating in this kind of tournament and winning the gold medal. I guess we're living a dream."

Determined mind behind the smile
Yet, for all the fantasy, Rossi has his feet firmly on the ground. He realises that the goodwill in Qinhuangdao will not help to win the matches or the medals that Italy have come here to claim - and his new-found friends are precisely the ones looking to embarrass the Azzurrini.
We're not familiar with any of these teams and at this age level, the unknown quantities are the most dangerous

Giuseppe Rossi on Italy's Group D opponents

"When the draw was made, truthfully, we were worried," he said. "We're not familiar with any of these teams and at this age level, the unknown quantities are the most dangerous. They will all be viewing us as a scalp, so I am sure that Honduras, Korea and Cameroon will be very tough to play against - and to beat."

The New Jersey-born starlet arrives at the Olympics on the crest of a wave. He scored 11 goals in 22 starts for Villarreal last season to help the Yellow Submarine to a second-placed finish in La Liga. However, while his club team-mates will be eagerly anticipating the UEFA Champions League draw on 28 August, he is, by his own admission, "firmly focused" on the Olympics.

An Italian state of mind
Back in 2006, Rossi was invited by the then USA coach Bruce Arena to attend a pre-FIFA World Cup™ training camp, but declined, stating his desire to play for Italy - and not the country of his birth. It is a decision which he feels has been vindicated given his presence at the Olympics.

"It's always been my dream to play for Italy, but I'd like to thank USA for giving me the opportunity to play for them," he said. "It's turned out exactly how way I wanted."

"For me, it's always good to play with Italian players - I feel at home. Plus, here I'm learning from two great former players (Pierluigi Casiraghi and Gianfranco Zola). They always give you great input, they know the game inside out and being ex-pros themselves, they know exactly what we want, but more importantly what we need. There's a great chemistry within the squad - and with the coaching staff, and that's part of the reason why we've been successful in our matches. Hopefully, that will continue in the weeks ahead."

Preview Beijing GROUP D

Preview Beijing GROUP D
Group D

Korea, Cameroon, Honduras, Italy

Italy's roster is comprised almost entirely of players from the domestic league, but unlike Australia or the Ivory Coast, this is not a weakness. Serie A is a world-class league, which should help the Olympic team. American turncoat Giuseppe Rossi (he was born in the states and raised in Clifton, N.J.; therefore he could and should play for the Americans) will lead the attack for Italy.

Cameroon will compete with Italy to win Group D. Alex Song, a talented midfielder, will key the passing game, while Andre Bikey is a rock in central defense. The Cameroonian squad includes other talented players who compete in the top European leagues, so there will be no experience deficit relative to Italy.

South Korea's roster, by contrast, is made up of mostly domestic players that have not yet made their marks on the world soccer stage. Veteran defender Kim Dong-Jin who plays in Russia is a regular for the full national team and will need to have strong performances if South Korea is to advance.

Honduras beat America in the final of the Concacaf qualifying tournament to finish atop the region. Once again, the squad features mostly domestic league players, with defender Hendry Thomas, who plays in England, providing steel in the defense. Carlos Pavon, a national team veteran, provides experience up front. He'll need to provide goals too if Honduras has any chance of qualifying.

Quarterfinals Prediction: Cameroon, Italy

China not big enough for Rossi !

China isn't enough for the youngster;

Beppe Rossi wants to go to the Austrian Swisses. He feels like, scoring 11 goals in 19 games in one of the strongest leagues in the world not called Serie A, is enough to take that last striker spot on the Senior Squad. And if you ask me, because I have an irrational hatred of all things Di Natale (and I have great childhood Christmas memories, thank you for asking Freud), if Antonio Cassano ain't coming, then bring on the Jersey Boy ! Ok maybe not, but I'd take freakin' injured Alessio Cerci to Switzerland before Di Natale. But that's just me

Honestly, what could Beppe Rossi do to get all of Roberto Donadoni's attention before the squad announcements? Maybe more media exposure will help, seeing how far away from Italy Spain is. Just ask Enzo Maresca if you're not sure. The Jersey Born Bomber decided to open a website just in case, www.giusepperossi.com. But it seems like it isn't only for attracting The Don's attention , per the Beppster's own words ;

For some time now, I have felt an urgent need to communicate with fans, and all sportsmen in general. I hop that you like my idea, a means for not only getting to know me better, but also a way for helping me understand the expectations, ideas and thoughts of those fans eager to write and speak to me

Should Giuseppe Rossi be on the Swiss Air flight ? He sure thinks so

The Future Number 9

The Future Number 9
Because Luca Toni is getting old and just won't cut it anymore.

Out of all positions where the Azzurri are overflowing with young quality, strikers might just be the most talented bunch. Last entry covered Giovinco, who to be fair isn't really a striker but still has a foot that can deliver a missile four countries over. Then there's Osvaldo, who plays for Fiorentina. Didn't do all that much in the Toulon... except score the goal in the final that won us the game (See, there's the difference between a player like him and Luca Toni- even if he doesn't score for the whole damn tournament, he popped up when it mattered). Then, of course, we have the two revelations of last year, Paloschi and Balotelli. Both are only 18 though so I don't expect to see them in the full national team for at least 4 or 5 years, but they could well be going places. And finally, we have the established young guns that you might have heard from before- Fabio “Bullshit” (and I mean that in the good way) Quagliarella and Gilardino. And then there's Boriello, who I'm not sold on yet. In my book, having one great season doesn't mean too much. If he repeats last year's stuff at Milan, then I'll be his new biggest fan. But as of right now he's merely a one hit wonder.

But who can really step up and take the number 9 shirt? How about a kid who wasn't even born in Italy?

Giuseppe Rossi was born in New Jersey. And yes, I am a New Jersian as well. But rest assured, I'm not being biased because of that (Though it is a plus). Just like how I think Giovinco was born to play the role of a number 10 on the Azzurri, I firmly believe this kid can step up and play the role of the number 9. Why? Well look at his stats:

This kid is 21 right now. He was snatched up by Man U 4 years ago. At the age of 17. Could just be me but attracting the attention of one of the biggest clubs in the world before you can even buy alcohol in your home country? Impressive

He was loaned out to Parma in 2007 and is widely credited as being the sole reason they didn't drop 2 seasons ago. He scored 9 goals in 19 games for them, which means he scores in just about every other game.

And right now he's on Villareal with a current striking record of 11 in 27.

One interesting point to note: this guy wasn't even called up for Toulon. So either he's so good that they didn't want to waste him on a friendly tournament (then why was Giovinco called up?), or Villareal didn't want to release him. Or maybe he's not as good as I'm hyping him up to be. But based off of these youtube videos, I'm guessing the former.

Safe to say, the strike-force of the Azzurri is pretty safe for the next decade. If we need a goal during regular play, it seems like there's easily 7 or 8 guys who can provide it for us. (And if we're down in the 80th and desperately need a goal? If Lippi doesn't put on Quags then maybe he's finally senile.) But I'm willing to bet that Rossi can be the most consistent striker for the Azzurri for the next decade.
